The right to freedom of expression has undergone great changes in the last twenty years in the Americas.
In 1998, the Office of the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression attached to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights began the publication of thematic reports that have served as a guide for the entire region, establishing standards in this area. As of 2001, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights resolved the first cases related to the right to freedom of expression and currently has 21 judgments that analyze some aspect of this right, to which two advisory opinions and various decisions are added. of provisional measures linked to ten specific cases. In addition, within the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights there are a significant number of admissibility reports, friendly settlement agreements, and merits reports, and an important number of thematic reports have been prepared through the Office of the Rapporteur. the content of the right to freedom of expression and its various aspects.
